THE FAN
Named for its streets, which “fan” out from Monroe Park, The Fan is one of Richmond’s largest and most historic neighborhoods. We’re talking 85 tree-lined blocks of Victorian, Edwardian and Colonial Revival houses, many of them brightly painted to trick you into thinking you’re in New Orleans. The Fan is home to a ton of restaurants, bars and small businesses, not to mention one of the state’s largest universities. If you want live music, contemporary art, strong coffee and 3 AM hot dogs all within walking distance, this is where it’s at.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A lot of RVA food institutions, from VCU’s vegetarian hotspot, Ipanema; to Joe’s Inn, an unpretentious stalwart; to Kuba Kuba, where eggs and toast come with plantains and sriracha sauce.
WHAT’S UNEXPECTED
Scuffletown Park, a hidden green space off the (very cute) Strawberry Street. When the days are warm you can stumble upon impromptu concerts, casual picnics and even a celebrity turtle who likes to socialize from time to time.
